The Trail Crafter I is the core course of Desert DAWN. This is the woodcraft trail camping course through which you will learn the age old trail craft skills of staying comfortable in nature with the basic gear and nature’s resources.
Early recreational campers knew how to whittle utensils with their field knife. Getting from point to point using map and compass navigation skills was second nature (no GPS). Setting up a cooking fire was a snap. Starting the fire with a stone and piece of metal was easier than “flicking a bic”. Then using that fire to cook up some supper capped off a wonderful day of exploring nature. Woodcraft skills were the way of the campers during the Golden Age of Camping. Woodcraft skills are the skills gained on the Trail Crafter I course. Learn more about the Trail Crafter I curriculum.
South Central Utah is famous for the riparian canyons within the Grand/Staircase Escalante National Monument. Traditional woodcraft camping provides an excellent means for exploring these canyons. Join us as we encounter the various treasures nature puts forth for us to enjoy.
