The Trail Crafter II Course is our basic land navigation course. This course covers one of the more critical trail craft skills – map and compass navigation. Using topographic maps and a basic compass we explore the intricate canyons and the desert of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument or the forests of Boulder Mountain. True to form for Desert DAWN courses, the end is not the goal, what happens along the way is the goal. Our navigation will take us through incredible canyons, over spectacular slickrock through mountain forests and expansive meadows. We will travel to view ancient rock art and take in all the beauty of the plants and animals of the area. All the while along the journey we will learn and practice our map and compass skills.
The primary lesson is navigation. Reading a map requires an understanding of the “language” the cartographers – those who draw the maps – use to communicate information about the land. You will experience reading a map and relating the map to the land. Then you discover how the compass provides greater information and a becomes a tool for navigating through ecosystems with dense vegetation.
Trail Crafter II is an intermediate level courses. Students should have a basic understanding of trail craft skills to participate fully in these courses. Rope craft, pack craft, knife craft, fire craft, and shelter craft skills will be reviewed on the course to help students refresh their memory. Students may consider attending our Trail Crafter I course if they feel their trail craft skills are a bit rusty and need some polishing. Students who take take both the Trail Crafter I & II in the same season will have the benefit of the multi-course tuition rates.
Join us as we explore the diverse ecosystems of the riparian canyons, the high desert or the mountain dorset and meadows. Expand your skills as we navigate to spectacular vistas, amazing cultural history sites and along the way delight in nature’s ways.
